Discourses on gender-based wage disparity and the factors that contribute to this disparity had its genesis in the 1950s. However, the context of these studies were pre-eminently high and middle-income societies. Further, these studies do not address the probable effects of a wide range of country-specific and outside the workplace determinants of gender-based wage disparity. This presentation draws on the findings of in-depth face-to-face interviews with mid-to senior level executives accessed through snowball sampling. The study analyses the perspectives of the subjects regarding whether gender-based wage disparity is pervasive in India and, if so, the evidence and causes for gender-based wage disparity. The findings of this study reveal that there is no workplace-based gender discrimination; however, a range of unique social, cultural, public policy, regulatory and other determinants have contributed to wage disparity and the disempowerment of women in the workplace.
